Communications Manager
SeattleDances is a Seattle dance journalism and advocacy organization. We are seeking a new team member to work closely with the Editorial Director in managing the daily operations of the site, advancing SeattleDance’s mission, and serving Seattle’s dance community.
Responsibilities include:
-Managing and organizing the inbox, timely correspondence with dance producers, writers, and the community at large, representing the organization in a professional manner.
-Managing SeattleDances facebook and instagram accounts, monitoring messages, creating posts that share our articles, promote the site, and promote local dance.
-Regularly testing site functionality
-Importing events and opportunities to our Calendar and Call-Board
-Working on special projects as necessary
-Tracking own hours and invoicing monthly
-May be paired with a writing position (see other listing) if desired and applicant has relevant experience/skill.
Hours and Pay
Independent contract position. Estimated 3 hours per week from home with additional monthly 2-hour in-person meeting. Manager can set their own hours, but time must be spread over at least 3 days a week (ie the inbox needs to be checked everyday, so this can be split/coordinated with Editorial Director).
Pay is $25/hour. Training hours are paid. Year-long contract with 8-week trial period to make sure it’s a good fit for both parties. One week paid time off. Up to two more weeks unpaid time off can be arranged in advance.
The ideal candidate:
-Is very reliable, communicative, and organized.
-Can work independently through a responsibilities list regularly without being reminded.
-Can identify and be proactive around any other needs that come up.
-Is knowledgeable about the Seattle dance scene, particularly independently produced dance and/or non-western dance forms in the Seattle area.
-Understands how to create fun and engaging posts for social media.
-Understands how to compose professional correspondence.
-Brings their own ideas to the table and can create a plan to execute them.
-Has passion for Seattle area dance and the work of SeattleDances.

Freelance Writing for SeattleDances
SeattleDances hires Seattle-based freelance writers as contractors on an ongoing basis. We seek writers who can bring new perspectives to our collective team, and who are working from an informed point of view–generally an insider knowledge of dance, but experienced writers/thinkers from other artistic disciplines will be considered. Previous published works is not a prerequisite, but the candidate must be open to working in a collaborative editing process within a writer-editor relationship, and open to learning and investigation. Editing is performed through Google Docs.
While most of our articles currently lean toward a journalistic style, we are open to more artistic/impressionistic pieces as well! Additionally, writers interested in the editorial form, interviews, news articles, critical analysis, historical perspectives, scholarly articles etc. are encouraged to apply. Writers are encouraged to develop their own voice and the ideal writer is proactive in pitching articles that pique their interest. Ability to work independently, follow through on commitments, and proactive communication is a must. Most writers write on a monthly basis. Scheduling is flexible.
All new writers will complete a three-article training period in which they will work closely with the editor to establish relationship, communication, and common expectations. After the three articles both parties will have an opportunity to determine if it’s a good fit. Training period is paid per article and expected to produce three published works.
Pay per article is based on type and length, ranging from $50 (example 400 word mini piece or email Q & A)-$125 (example interview or feature article involving more extensive research). Most reviews (800-ish words) will pay $80.

Interested in submitting an article for publication? We also accept one-off articles, editorials, research pieces, reflections, etc. Must be relevant to dance and the Seattle area. Writer needs to be open to participating in a collaborative online editing process as described above. Please email article submission to editors@seattledances.com, no need to complete application.
