Could Ben Affleck’s Batman have been truly great? New concept art for his cancelled solo film shows the Caped Crusader in a brawl with Deathstroke.
The tale of the old DC Universe is written on the gravestones of projects that never came to life. Perhaps the most infamous of these scrapped endeavors was Ben Affleck’s solo outing as Batman. The film had a completed script penned by Affleck himself and comic legend Geoff Johns before being shelved, with early details suggesting that Deathstroke was set to be the villain of the film.
For years fans were convinced that the ill-fated script was all that existed of the canned Batman project. However, to celebrate Batman day, storyboard artist Jay Olivia unveiled concept art showcasing Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight in a brawl against Deathstroke. The pattern of the costume seemingly confirms that Joe Manganiello was set to reprise his role as Slade Wilson in the project following his debut in the theatrical cut of Justice League.
The Tragic Fate Of Ben Affleck’s Batman Film
It would be easy for fans to blame the leadership of the old DC Universe for why Batman never squared off with Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke on the silver screen. However, Ben Affleck actually left the project of his own volition. While official statements have only referred to the impetus of his departure as “personal reasons,” it’s likely his decision was at least influenced by the strain that the role took on his mental health during the release of Justice League.
Ben Affleck’s departure from the project did hold a silver lining. With the film now missing a director and a star, Matt Reeves was brought on to retool the concept of a Batman solo film of the new era of the DC Universe. While it lacks the high-flying action that would’ve been promised with a film focused on taking down Deathstroke, The Batman has ended up as one of the most beloved pieces of media in the character’s history. However, there’s certainly a part of every fan that wishes both were able to get made!
