Those of you who have read my blog for a while know that my son Nick – in the picture, the good-looking one second from left – is one of the guitarists in a post-rock band called Pray for Sound. I wrote about them here and here. (And a few others. Use search bar.)
Well, they have a new album dropping soon called Nightswimming. And while post-rock isn’t my go-to genre, this is some (and I say this as objectively as I can) heavy shit. From their press release:
Pray For Sound is an American post-rock band from Boston, Massachusetts. Forming in late 2012, the quintet developed an inimitable chemistry, playing numerous stages in the United States, Canada, Europe, and China. (Believe it or not, yes they did play in China and are playing there again this month. More on that in a subsequent post).
Their sound ranges from lush, ambient soundscapes to crushing metal riffs and everything in between. Live shows with Pray For Sound promise a loud, cathartic explosion of instrumental rock, coupled with an intense synchronized light show.
“Pray For Sound dives headfirst into a heavy wash, exploring feelings of loss, anger and introspection, punctuated with moments of elation and ultimately triumph.
Nightswimming includes 9 tracks produced, recorded and mixed by the band and their drummer, Steve Aliperta, with additional engineering by Chris LaRocque and Adam Hand. “Daylight” and “Dorsia” feature collaboration with Mark Owen of We Lost The Sea, and the music video for Nightswimming is brought to life by Christopher Royal King of This Will Destroy You.”
The only tune released thus far is this one called (for some reason) “Alyssa Milano.” (I would have called it Nicole Kidman but that’s just me. Maybe it’s a generational thing.)
It’s a highly melodic tune and – as Larry David would say – pretty, pretty, pretty good. Good for that long drive, that last joint – or both.
