A restricted grade race at a midweek Sandown meeting may not be the normal path to a Group 1 race a month later.
But Linas Legend put his hand up as a potential 2021 Caulfield Guineas prospect with his victory in the Tile Importer Handicap (1300m) on Wednesday.
Linas Legend is unbeaten in two starts this campaign, racing to victory in a maiden at Echuca on August 26 before an equally victory in benchmark 64 company on Wedensday.
Sent out the $2.05 favourite under Damian Lane, Linas Legend led throughout to scored two lengths from Fortunate Kiss ($4.40) with Get On The Gas ($16) a further 2-¼ lengths away third.
Ben Gleeson, assistant-trainer to Danny O’Brien, said Linas Legend had impressed in the way he controlled the race.
“I was watching the sectionals go by,” Gleeson said.
“He’s rolled along, controlled the race and quickened away.
“He’s done it at both ends and has stamped himself as a quality colt.
“The turn of foot shows he’s quite versatile, so there is a certain mile race that could be on the cards.
“There’s the Prelude in a couple of weeks, he may have earned a spot there, but Danny will make that decision.”
Gleeson said Linas Legend had more brilliance that a lot of his sire Teofilo’s stock.
“Quite often they are the same type of horse, but the way he is built, he’s a very imposing horse and seems like he will appreciate getting out to a mile,” Gleeson said.
Lane is now unbeaten on Linas Legend having taken the right on the three-year-old at Echuca.
He was impressed with the Linas Legend handled the rise in grade on Wednesday.
“He’s made good progression from his first-up win, and I think he will progress again,” Lane said.
“A mile will be no issue, but I’m not sure beyond that at this stage.”
