The DC Universe may have finally found its Hal Jordan! A new report suggests the studio is eyeing Kyle Chandler to play the iconic Green Lantern in Lanterns.
A new report by Deadline gives fans a surprising update on the Lanterns casting situation. While half a dozen actors from Josh Brolin to Ewan McGregor have been said to be up for the role of Hal Jordan in the DC Universe, it seems a a dark horse has entered the race to play the most famous Green Lantern. That horse is Emmy-winning actor Kyle Chandler.
Kyle Chandler is best known for his award-winning role as Eric Taylor in the series Friday Night Lights. He has a long history with prestige TV, as well as action blockbusters like Godzilla: King of Monsters. This combination makes him a surprisingly good fit for the DC Universe’s Lanterns show, with the project set to focus on an older Hal Jordan tutoring the Green Lantern prodigy John Stewart in a True Detective-inspired mystery series.

At the helm as showrunner and executive producer of LANTERNS is Chris Mundy, known for his work on HBO’s True Detective: Night Country and Ozark. Mundy is co-writing the series with Damon Lindelof, known for HBO’s Watchmen and The Leftovers, and Eisner Award winner Tom King, recognized for Mister Miracle and Supergirl. Both Lindelof and King will also serve as executive producers for the series.
According to the official logline, LANTERNS “follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
