It’s quite possible that the last Justin Timberlake song you remember is “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” off the Trolls: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Yes, he’s released an entire new album and a Trolls Holiday collection since then, but none of those releases have come close to the ubiquity of that 2016 single. The song debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent an entire year (!) on the chart. It’s quite possibly the biggest hit of Timberlake’s career—nominated for both an Academy Award as well as a Grammy. (The closest he’s come since is his Chris Stapleton duet, “Say Something,” which only reached No. 9 on the Billboard chart.)
So, it should come as no surprise that Timberlake is back on his bullshit, joining the soundtrack for the Trolls sequel. On Wednesday he released the lead single from Trolls World Tour. It’s called “The Other Side,” and you will never stop hearing it. He’s joined by the incredible SZA, for the pop-funk track produced by Freenjoy, who has made tracks for the likes of The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, and Harry Styles.
Having heard it at least once, it’s a pretty fun song. Family friendly, it’s something your aunt can dance to at weddings. (There will certainly be animated trolls singing and dancing to it.) But I can’t promise that I—or anyone else—will be feeling the same way after the one millionth listen. The movie is out on April 17, so we have more than a month of hearing this non-stop for promotional material. Parents, I hate to inform you that you will be hearing the Trolls World Tour soundtrack on repeat for the foreseeable future. But it could be worse, we could be back in 2016 listening to “Can’t Stop the Feeling” again.
And don’t blame Timberlake for all of this, he couldn’t possibly stop the money that Trolls music brings in.
