Paris-based American artist, Julia Gaeta, debuted her industrial, darkwave single “Weight of You” last month to eager ears. The track acts as the first offering for the artist’s solo journey and debut EP which is set to be released later this year.
“Weight of You” explores the gloomier shade of attraction, a place that is ignored in order to make things work. The track is spaced between a dreamy, trip-hop production — thanks to James “Perturbator” Kent — to an industrial despair, which counts for much of the narrative romanticizing the what if’s.
“The song ‘Weight of You’ brings the listener into a tempting world with no clear resolution,” says Gaeta. “It’s really about the alluring addiction to painful love, whether with a person or a thing. If that something you love is broken, all you want to try to do is fix it. But it never works.”
Gaeta’s tone relishes on the track’s Neo-distortion for a lucid, sensual soundscape. The accompanying visual plays upon the track’s rapid movements of a grim city and flashes a gritty, picturesque moment of realization. David Fitt’s direction explores the uninhabited space of Paris through a cool palette to elevate Gaeta’s composition of both beauty and pain co-existing from the same source.
“The video was shot in the Pigalle neighborhood of Paris, famous for its sex clubs and cocktail bars,” continues Gaeta. “Director David Fitt and I share a love for David Lynch and his hazy, dreamlike worlds of cabaret and sensual darkness. So the video is an homage to Lynch and Paris’s mix of grit and beauty, which always blows my mind and has helped me articulate, musically, the themes and songs from my upcoming EP.”
