Toronto-based newcomer Delyn Grey is taking aim at stigmas with her latest single, “Battle,” accompanied by a classically-shot video. With a minimalist shooting style, we are directed to a room with faded walls and a juxtaposition of post-punk drab within early-00’s pop-rock cuts.

Grey’s voice is informed — she’s a student of pop with a choir background — with a band leading father and music-loving mother. Her aim is for the soul: to ring psychological bells with a powerful earworm. She channels the energy of her musical forebears as their influence caught her early in life.

The video itself portrays a few points of a pit of depression. A soft black-and-white video exclusively focuses on Grey as she stands between opposing contrasts of a room. Depression demands isolation and often resists a positive urge to venture outside — to the crowds of human contacts who move in waves or pool around your circle. It keeps her on the inside looking out as she calls out with exponential energy for a reprieve. It’s that energy that carries Grey, along with many of us listening, from the darkness to the brilliant light. Though for now, we wade through the space between the two with growing hope.

In a way, these fresh perspectives from a young artist of those deep pits so many of us face can be welcome. It’s like a recalibration of our psyche that reorients us forward and, in due time, yields positive and fruitful results.

“When I turned 17 I fell into the heaviest depression, ever,” Grey said. “ I chose to take advantage of it, and what was trying to break me. ‘Battle,’ among other tracks, is the product of my resistance, acceptance, and fight during that time. Vocalizing my frustration, fear, and anger is what eventually got me through it. My hope is that this song will find people that need it, just like it found me.”

“Battle” is Grey’s first single of the year and cut from her forthcoming EP, Disappointment Girl, out soon.
