Is Superman taking inspiration from Justice League International? DC art Kevin Maguire clarifies his comments about his visit to the film’s set.
Kevin Maguire, an artist best known for his work on DC’s Justice League International book, recently took a trip to the set of the upcoming Superman film. It seemed he had an amazing time during his visit back in May, recounting the trip he took with a number of iconic comic artists and writers during the film’s production, and commenting on what he saw as key inspirations for the project.
“Me and a bunch of other writers and artists were invited to the set of Superman for a day in May. They showed us everything,” Maguire explained to Comic Frontier in a recent chat. “They showed us the pre-production stuff. They showed us some footage. I got to walk around the Fortress of Solitude set and watch them shoot a scene. There’s definitely a JLI sort of influence there.”
“And it wouldn’t surprise me, given, you know, Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad, that if the James Gunn universe were going to put together a Justice League, it probably wouldn’t be Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash. It would probably be like the weird, offbeat characters. Like, I don’t think it would be like our initial lineup.”
Many fans took these comments from Kevin Maguire as confirmation that Justice League International would be a large influence on Superman and the new DC Universe, something that had previously only been talked about in the abstract. However, as with most comments in the modern age, it seems Maguire was taken a bit out of context in subsequent discussions.
Kevin Maguire Clarifies His Superman Thoughts
Kevin Maguire would take to social media as his comments about the Justice League International inspiration for Superman blew up across the net. According to Maguire, he never meant to say that the set visit confirmed anything for him regarding the inspirations. Rather, it was clear to him the moment he saw the opening lineup for the DC Universe.
“This is why I NEVER do interviews,” Maguire posted on Threads. “My saying there was a JLI influence on SUPERMAN had nothing to do with anything I saw during the set visit but was based on common knowledge, the fact that Guy Gardner, Maxwell Lord and Booster Gold were part of the DCU’s opening wave.”
Even though Kevin Maguire may not know anything secret about Superman that many fans might have assumed, it’s clear that he sees the Justice League International‘s influence on the DC Universe as much as fans do. So even though this isn’t official confirmation, it wouldn’t be a shock to see the iconic super team hit the silver screen sooner rather than later.
