Before Holiday Weekend, Facebook Reminds U.S. Users to Wear a Damn Mask

It really should be obvious at this point, but with America continuing to surpass previous records for daily new coronavirus cases, a warning seems warranted: If you plan on getting together with people to celebrate the Fourth of July this weekend, wear a mask.

That’s the impetus behind a new alert Facebook is pushing out at the top of Facebook and Instagram feeds nationwide this week. In lieu of the holiday weekend, it’s an effort to remind people to protect themselves and others by wearing face coverings to help stop the spread of covid-19, the potentially deadly respiratory illness caused by the virus.

With the rise in COVID-19 cases in the US, we’re putting an alert at the top of Facebook and Instagram to remind everyone to wear face coverings and find more prevention tips from the CDC in our COVID-19 Information Center,” the company wrote in a Thursday blog post.

(It should be noted that even with the Fourth of July coming up, this timing seems pretty convenient given all the bad press Facebook’s had this week. Between new allegations surfacing about racial discrimination against its Black employees and its widgets legally being qualified as wiretaps, I’ve no doubt Zuck and the other leads at Facebook are eager to be painted as something other than mustache-twirling movie villains right now.)

The alert, which echoes guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published in April, is available in both English and Spanish in the U.S. with plans to roll the feature out internationally in the future, Facebook told NBC.

G/O Media may get a commission

“This decision is based on public health and messaging coming from our partners. Like everyone else we’re concerned about the recent uptick in cases and thought this was an especially important message to go loud with heading into the holiday weekend,” Facebook said in an emailed statement to the outlet.

Despite overwhelming data from experts and researchers that show masks help reduce the spread of the virus, wearing one has become an increasingly politicized topic in America. Right-wing politicians and conspiracy theorists alike have spun statewide requirements to wear masks and related shelter-in-place orders as Constitutional violations and covert schemes orchestrated by liberals, baseless theories that nonetheless have spread like wildfire across social media along with a scourge of other coronavirus misinformation.

Social media platforms have been struggling to curb this spread of fake claims and misinformation online for the bulk of this year, though several have ramped up their efforts as states nationwide have begun relaxing their coronavirus restrictions (in apparent disregard to data that clearly suggests that’s a very bad idea).

Yesterday, Twitter waded into the discussion with a tweet promising to satisfy users’ long-running demand for an option to edit their posts. There’s just one stipulation: “You can have an edit button when everyone wears a mask,” the company wrote, no doubt tongue-in-cheek since CEO Jack Dorsey has previously said the chances of that happening are effectively zero.

Snapchat tried to incentivize wearing face masks this week as well in the form of a new selfie filter, NBC reports. If the filter detects that a user is wearing a face mask, it gives them the option to decorate it. For users not wearing a mask, though, the filter instructs them to correct that and doesn’t mince words, displaying a message that reads “PUT ON A FACE MASK.”

On Thursday, the U.S. reported 55,220 new coronavirus cases, the largest single-day total since the pandemic began, according to the Washington Post. The nation leads the world in total cases at more than 2.7 million and total deaths at 129,227 people per the Coronavirus Research Center at Johns Hopkins. And, unlike other developed countries, the U.S. seems far from flattening the virus’s curve within its borders.

If these tallies terrify you, good! Please keep them in mind while celebrating safely this weekend.

Researchers trained a quadruped robot to cross a balance beam

While four-legged robots can achieve impressive feats, like pulling an airplane or climbing a fence, they still have a few limitations. In most cases, they need a fairly large surface to walk on. A team of Italian robotics researchers is looking to change that. They’ve created a robotic controller that allows a quadruped robot to walk across a thin beam.

The four-legged robot can balance on just two legs and walk heel-toe. In digital simulations, the controller allowed a 90-kilogram robot to cross a bridge only six centimeters wide. In a video, the Instituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) researchers demonstrate how a robot equipped with the controller maintains balance on two feet even when it’s pushed around. The robot can even balance on two legs as it adjusts to different heights. The IIT team detailed their findings in a paper available on arXiv

Create real art with LEGO – The Gadgeteer

NEWS – When I was a kid, my parents didn’t have money to buy me LEGO sets even though I begged for them each Christmas. When I became an adult, I bought lots of sets for myself, but now those bricks live in tubs somewhere in my garage. Every so often, I think about all those lonely unused bricks and wonder if there’s something cool that I could build with them, and now I’ve been inspired by LEGO’s Art series.

Imagine building a real piece of art that you can hang on the wall with LEGO bricks that feature Iron Man, The Beatles, Star Wars, and even the famous pop artist Andy Warhol.

There’s no info on pricing or when these art kits will be available, but you can read more about them by visiting LEGO.com.

Google SmartReply Comes to YouTube Studio

Photo: Robyn Beck/AFP (Getty Images)

Google announced Wednesday that it had implemented its SmartReply system for YouTube creators, which will give those users access to suggested replies based on what someone has commented. Unlike the SmartReply system Google currently uses for Gmail, SmartReply on YouTube required some further tweaking because of the way people us language on that platform compared to email—it will even auto-suggest emojis.

“In comparison to emails, which tend to be long and dominated by formal language, YouTube comments reveal complex patterns of language switching, abbreviated words, slang, inconsistent usage of punctuation, and heavy utilization of emoji,” said Google in its blog post about the feature.

The blog goes into a lot more technical detail about how Google changed SmartReply for YouTube, but basically, the previous system was only written for a small number of languages and genres of writing. That obviously wasn’t all that compatible with how language is used in the YouTube comments section, which has a syntax and culture all its own. So, instead of using a word-level preprocessing technique, YouTube’s SmartReply uses a single cross-lingual model for all supported languages, which includes emojis, ASCII art, and language switching.

So for example, if someone comments with a heart emoji, YouTube’s SmartReply could auto-suggest another heart in response. Or, if someone makes a negative comment, SmartReply could auto-suggest a helpful response. Some switching between English and Spanish in the comments? Yup, the AI algorithm has something up its sleeves for that, too.

Here’s what it looks like:

G/O Media may get a commission

However, according to The Next Web, the tool will only work with comments SmartReply thinks creators are likely to engage with, so maybe it won’t actually come up with a witty retort to internet trolls invading the comments. (Shame.) But if a creator does reply back to negative comments often, it’s possible that it will as well.

The most immediate benefit to SmartReply, as I have benefited from myself when responding to emails, is the amount of time it saves. Sure, typing out “thanks” doesn’t take that long, but it’s still faster to click a button and have the word appear without having to put too much thought into it. When you have many emails to sort through in a day, anything to help save time is a godsend. The same concept applies for YouTube creators, who go through hundreds of comments on a single video. Anything that helps them responds faster seems pretty handy.

Currently, the updated SmartReply feature for YouTube is focused on English and Spanish, but Google plans to add more languages to its AI algorithm in the future.

Amped Studio online DAW supports VST plugins via ‘experimental’ tech

Online digital audio workstation (DAW) music production apps are popular because, unlike local apps, they can run on machines that aren’t necessarily super-powerful. However, a downside is that you can’t use powerful VST plugins that do functions like noise reduction, auto-tune or sampled instruments.

Amped Studio has announced that it has solved that problem, albeit in a limited way, with a new experimental update called VST/Remote. It allows you to run 64-bit VST2 plugins (effects or synths) on macOs or Windows 10 systems. There are some serious limitations, however. It supports no other formats or operating systems, only one plugin can be active in a project at a time and VST parameter automation won’t work.
